The Indian Express

Newspaper Review by: koffeetoes

The Indian Express , lives upto its motto, Journalism of Courage. Over the past few years it has blown the top of many
scams and politicians in India. Reviewing the news sections: The newspaper tries not just to give news but also some good cutting analysis. In a day when news channels arre taking over the public imagination, The Indian Express strives to give not just the news but also some eye opening analysis putting the events of the day in perspective for the common man. The headlines are not only eyecatching, but also opinionated. For example: the failure of the launch of INSAT-4C evoked a headline: 'INSAT 4C goes down in smoke in what ISRO calls 'rare event'.' The sarcasm in the headline was evoked by the fact that two days ago the Agni-III Missile had been test-fired and failed. The Indian Express has it's own definition of news and sometimes what other newspapers define as news may not be what the paper considers as news. For The Indian Express , news is reporting on illegal mining, child adoption racket, or may be just an insider story. For example during the recent ban on bar girls in Mumbai, The Indian Express journalists made the effort to go and get an insider's view of the world and life of bar dancers after the ban. The basic issue they tackled was that of livelihood.
One interest instance of news as reported by The Indian Express is that of the murder of Satyendra Dubey. An official at the PMs office he was privy to some mishandling of finanaces regarding the Golden Quadrangle project. Another example is the petrol pump scam wherein it was found that politicians had illegally allocated petrol pumps to their friends and relatives. Both these stories were picked up by both national and international media. It also led to widespread outrage against the system. Another event were The Indian Expr e ss has shown it's responsibility as a national media is during the Godhra communal riots. The newspaper not only managed to report elaborately but also conducted indepth investigations into the religious killing. Interesting photographs and good language make this paper a newspaper for the intelligent.
