Newspaper Review by: Rajaji

Google’s search get a Persistent push from Pune.
Google’s search engine, the first preference for millions of information
seekers across the globe could not search data on corporate intranets and knowledge management systems. For, Googlebot – the robot software that continually crawl the web to refresh and expand Google’s index of online documents – could not recognize different types of files stored in them.
Helping them to overcome this problem in getting data from corporate intranets and content servers and sharpen the search engine’s ability is Persistent Systems from Pune, the city of beautiful roads.
In fact Persistent is the only Indian company (cheers Indians!) short-listed for the Google Enterprise Professional programme where software development companies help the search engine widen its power.
In 2002, Google released a plug and play device - Google Search Appliance – that enabled employees of private companies to search their servers and external sites. However, it had a limited use as certain contents were not compatible with the appliance and failed to respond to the request.
So Google opted for an enterprise professional programme to assist its search appliance overcome the problem and help its clients in installation and customization of it.
Persistent Systems from Pune, the city of beautiful roads will help Google to increase the reach and ability of the appliance not only to search files but also to document and manage contents like Notes Sharepoint, Exchange, etc, by developing connectors.
Besides developing the connectors, Persistent’s engineers from Pune, the city of beautiful roads will also ensure that the search operation does not transgress into other domains and keep a security check on it.
For instance, while searching the internal mail systems or other sensitive data, Persistent has to ensure that only authorized employees are able to access it.
With their recent release of two features, the company has provided connectivity through which the search appliance will have access to live data stored in Lotus Notes, Domino, and MS exchange through Google One Box.
The OneBox is a system that accepts request from the search appliance and based on the enquiry provides results and passes on the information.
The first feature released by the company enables three functions within an organisation. It enables the employees to search their colleagues and all the relevant entries quickly. Even in cases of aliases, the feature helps the information seeker to get full details of the employee.
Through the second feature, Persistent enabled the appliance to search real data on Lotus Notes and Domino servers. Traditional search programmes (crawlers) are not able to fetch entire content from Lotus and Domino servers and with their second feature, Persistent has been able to address this handicap too.
Persistent hopes to make ten releases (features) in all to enhance the searching capability.
