seed Saina Nehwal and third seed Chetan Anand moved into the men’s and women’s
finals of the 71st Senior National Badminton Championship on Saturday, a day which saw holder Anup Sridhar being upset. Chetan trounced Rohan Castellino 21-11, 21-7, while the 17-year-old Saina defeated B R Meenakshi 21-12, 21-9. In the final, Chetan will battle it out with Air India’s Anand Pawar, who overpowered Ravinder Singh of Uttar Pradesh 22-20, 21-11. Saina’s final clash is with third seed Aditi Mutatkar, who also scored an easy 21-9, 21-10 victory over Trupti Murgunde. Top
seeds Jwala Gutta and Shruti Kurian of PSPB pipped Anita Ohlan and Dhanya Nair of Railway 21-8, 21-9 to enter the women’s
doubles final. They will
meet Aparna Balan and B R Meenakshi (both kerala), who beat Deepti Shalini (BSNL) and Dipti Priyadarshini (Andhra). In men’s doubles, top seeds Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas (both PSPB) secured a place in the final beating teammates Marcos Bistow and Jaison Xavier 21-16, 21-11. They will face up with V Diju (PSPB) and JBS Vidyadhar (Andhra), who upset second seeds Jaseel Ismail and Jose George (PSPB) 21-14, 21-14. Earlier, top seed Sridhar lost to Ravinder Singh 21-10, 20-22 and 18-21. Second seed P Kashyap (Andhra) also lost to Rohan Castelino (Kar) 18-21, 21-19, 17-21. In the mixed doubles, V Diju (PSPB) and Aparna Balan (Kerala) will meet P Jyotsna (Andhra) and Vineeth Manual (Kar) in the final. PTI
