Breathe-in Good Health
Breathing correctly can keep you safe from a number of illnesses. Every breath you take makes
a difference to your body. Improper breathing can cause chemical and physiological effects on the body. Inhaling and exhaling from the nose is the natural way of breathing. But a good percentage of people are breathing through their mouth which is faster than breathing through nose. When people breath from the mouth, it’s dry air breathing and can lead to bronchitis. When we breathing through nose, it humidifies the air passage and prevents sinusitis. Breathing is all about filling our lungs with oxygen and expelling out carbon-di-oxide. But if we breath too deeply or too often we lose too much carbon-di-oxide which can result in a panic attack as we upset the acid/alkaline balance in the body. Also breathing out too often can trigger some harmful metabolic activity. On the other hand, breathing slowly or shallow breathing slows down the oxygen intake to the body parts. Many children suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea(OSA) due to shallow breathing. OSA in adults leads to hypertension, heart and lung disorders. Overweight people have problems in breathing right as their oxygen requirement is more due to fat deposits in their nasal passage. People can also experience sleepiness and fatigue due to wrong breathing techniques.
University of Westminster released a review last year describing how the effects of HYPOCAPNIA (where the level of carbon dioxide in blood is less than normal) on blood flow and oxygen in the body could cause increased joint and muscle pain. Australia practices a breathing technique called ‘BUTEYKO’ which trains people to breath in a controlled way so that they do not become depleted of carbon dioxide. People should find a balance in their breathing and not ignore incorrect breathing as it can cause long term illnesses.
