Veerappan versus Dadua
Veerappan was a Vanniar while Dadua was a Kurmy by caste. The former was a worshipper of Kali, while the latter was a devotee to Hanuman. Veerappan who was killed on Oct. 18,2004 committed his first crime in July 1987 & had 138 murders in his name while Dadua who was killed on July 22,2007 had committed 156 murders since May 1975. One interesting common factor about the two is that while the Tamilnadu & Karnataka police did not have a photograph of Veerappan till he was interviewed by a magazine, the Madhya Pradesh & Uttar Pradesh police were not so fortunate because Dadua was never photographed at all. One more common factor between the two is that while Dadua got constructed a huge Hanuman temple at the outskirts of Chitrakoot,Veerappan too had got constructed a magnificent temple of goddess Kali at his native village. Moreover Veerappan as a brigand survived for 17 years merely because of political patronage while for Dadua this period extended to three decades. But here are some uncommon factors too between the two which are as follows:
-The Tamilnadu govt. recommended promotion of the ADGP who headed the STF, to DGP, SP to DIG & so on down the line for all 752 men of the STF including hundreds of those who were not even close to the ambush site where Veerappan was shot dead. For IPS
officers recommendations for out of turn promotions were also made. UP GOVERNMENT
announced the
cash reward of Rs.10
lakh for the 22 officers who were at the ambush site in Dadua operation & whose names figure in the FIR lodged with the Chitrakoot police in connection with the encounter.
-Jayalalitha announced a cash reward of Rs.2 lakh to each of the 652 non-gazetted rank officers &Rs.5 lakh to each of the 100 gazetted officers of the STF in appreciation of their dedicated work. This did not include the cash reward announced on Veerappan’s head. MAYAWATI announced a cash reward of Rs.20 lakh for the STF team that liquidated Dadua. This included the Rs. 10 lakh reward which the brigand and his killed gang members carried on their head. Therefore the actual reward announced for the 20 non-gazetted rank personnel of the STF involved in the encounter was Rs.10 lakh. This fetched each of them only Rs.50,000. No cash reward for the senior cops.
