A RESURGENT INDIA
On 15th.aug.2007 India celebrated its 60th. Independence day.A day cherished by all indians, whether living in India or abroad. In the last 60 years we have seen unprecedented events and upheavels. But today we are proud that India is no longer a developing country, the tag that we have been carrying all these years.Today India is seen as a potential economic powerhouse and a superpower in the making.
India,in the past, has been ruled by clans, dynasties and plunderers. Now India is one of the world''s largest democracies.A democracy that really works. At the helm is the President,a first timer, who happens to be the first lady to be elected for the post . Mrs. Pratibha Patil ,the President-elect, is a seasoned politician and a devout congress leader. The countrys largest political party,Congress, is also being lead by an equally charismatic lady.Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, wife of ex-pm Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, enjoys the confidence of her party.
Nowadays it is common to hear India-centric discussions. We are leading the software revolution and are counted as the best. Many MNC''s and transnational companies have Indians occupying the top slot. The BPO or call centres as they are called till yesterday were in a nascent stage. But today it is a burgeoning industry employing a large section of the population.Call centre employees, often referred to as grave shift workers, are a happy lot, earning five figure salaries and perks.
India has a dominant pharmaceutical industry. We have seen a lot of mergers and acquisitions.Cutthroat competition has had a beneficial effect on the evergrowing population. The prices of medicines are economical and within the reach of the common man.Indian generic medicines can be seen in pharmacies in U.K., USA and the European union.
The health sector has also undergone a seachange. Every small village /town in India has a Primary Health Centre, run by a qualified doctor ,sufficiently stocked with necessary medicines.Westerners now prefer to have a bye-pass surgery in India to take benefit of the low cost.
Every sector is booming. The tourism industry is growing in leaps and bounds. On any given day you can see hordes of foreigners alighting from chartered flights and making a beeline to either go to Goa,Kerala or the Lakshadweep islands.
There are predictions that India will eventually surpass traditional superpowers like USA,Japan and China by the year 2020.Until then lets keep our fingers crossed.
