PROBLEMS CONTINUE WIH N-
DEAL
The Indo-US
nuclear deal has been in difficulty, for quite some time. The Parliament had a marathon discussion on various aspects of this deal. This is highlighted on the front page of Times of India of Dec 06, 07. Government of India wants to first complete the process of operationalization of the
agreement, before taking sense of the house. Government said that this deal does not affect our right to conduct nuclear tests, or our foreign
policy, which continues to be independent. In case, conducting of nuclear test is considered necessary, it will be done, and this has not been banned in the present nuclear deal. However, the hour long reply of the External Affairs Minister did not satisfy the
opposition, with the result the Left parties, BJP, and the third front staged a walk out. This made the External Affairs Minister agitated. The CPM
leader said that he is not fully convinced, and the majority of the house disagrees with the deal. The Leader of the Opposition said that the Government should carry the
people and the Parliament with them, and not try to implement it in a hurry. The reply of the Government left a large part of the house dissatisfied with the deal.
