Indian Textile
Industry has an overwhelming presence in the economic life of the country. Apart from providing one of the basic necessities of life i.e. cloth, the textile industry provides direct employment to about 35 million persons including disadvantaged sections of the society like women and handicapped people. Besides, another 50 million people are engaged in allied activities.
The policy initiatives taken by the Government in the last two Union Budgets have created an enabling environment propelling growth and investment in the Textile Sector.
Entrepreneurs can start looking at this industry as a promising one. India is one of the few countries that encompass the entire supply chain in close proximity, from diverse fibers to a large market. The close linkage of the textile industry to agriculture and the ancient culture and traditions of the country make the Indian textiles sector unique when compared to the textiles industry of other countries.
The raw material is obtained from the vast agricultural practices in India. The refining, processing and supply of raw material is usually done in the rural sector. The raw material is then transformed into usable home furnishing goods and is given a unique presentation by skilled craftsmen. The most profitable step is the establishment of small scale industry catering to the production of hand made and hand woven handicraft items.
