Communist Parties’s chief
Prakash Karat’s proclamation that they would only agree to Indo-US
Nuclear deal
after Bush administration is somewhat doubtful again! While three likely
occupant of White House-Barack Obama,Hillary Clinton and Jhon MacCain view India differently. Hillary may has a long
association with India but according to her view there’s much that US and China can accomplish together. Mr. Obama is
strong opponent of India’s nuclear independence. However Mr.MacCain has been positive.
President Bush is the
first president to declare the importance by easing US technology
sanctions. The
historic nuclear agreement of July 2005 has provided a window of opportunity to
end the international nuclear sanctions India has been facing for over three decades. On
February18, 2008 prime minister’s special envoy Shyam Saran noted that
continuation of sanction would become progressively more detrimental and could
impact the emerging economy. The most important point that Saran made was that whatever
reservation we may have with respect to our relation with US, no other country
in the world could end existing sanctions unless US take the lead.
Once these sanctions
end the bulk of our nuclear cooperation would be with France and Russia and on obligation to import reactors from US,
if it finds the term unacceptable. Moreover there seems to be a striking
similarity between the rhetoric of our Communist parties and Chinese statement on
the issue. Like Chinese these parties are opposed to India acquiring nuclear
weapons, despite
continuing assistance to nuclear and missile programs of Pakistan. The Chinese made it clear that they’d not
agree to end nuclear sanctions till India dismantled its nuclear weapons and signed
the N.P.T.!
Perhaps the communist
could clarify whether they’re as opposed to Chinese missile and nuclear
transfer to Pakistan, invasion and intrusion of Vietnam and Bhutan, claims to Tawang and Arunachal Pradesh
and supply of weapons to a despotic Nepalese monarchy or to end global nuclear
sanctions against India!
