SUDARSHAN KRIYA
In Art of Living programmes, Sudarshan Kriya is a rhythmic breathing exercise.
Times of India of Feb 24, 08, gives the details of a study, where this is also involved. With increasing age, cells of our body die, arteries gets deposits and cells grow wildly. This may be due to the chemical process taking place in our cells and genes, or the antioxidant status. Biochemists of AIIMS carried out a pilot study on the effect of Sudarshan Kriya, on the antioxidant status of a person. These oxygen radicals are highly charged molecules and detrimental by products, constantly damaging and destroy our body cells. Each person has an antioxidant defence system, which destroys these radicals. If this system is weak, radicals increase and our cells die quickly. With reduced number of oxygen radicals, we may live a longer and less diseased life. This can be done through a diet of vegetables and fruits, taking more antioxidants like Vitamin A, C, E and beta carotene. The initial studies indicate that higher antioxidants in our diet are beneficial, but not the larger studies. Smoking, drinking, work and family tensions increase oxidative stress, affecting our molecules and genes, for which Yoga and meditation are helpful. AIIMS tested and compared the blood of (a) 42 persons practising Sudarshan Kriya and (b) other 42 persons not practising it, or any other technique for stress. Those practising Sudarshan Kriya had a better antioxidant level at enzyme and gene level, less DNA damage and cell aging. This may be helpful in reducing heart and cancer problems, and increasing the span of life. But one thing is clear that, ancient practices are now being scientifically proved, to help us in our efforts for a long and healthy life.
