VEDIC SCRIPTURES AND NATURE
Vedic scriptures have touched upon the issues like pollution and climate change, which are important in the present day situation. These stressed on the relationship of human beings and the nature, and the right way of living. Times of India of May 13, 08 discusses this point. Five Maha-yajnas are described. Brahma yajna is meditation and chanting the name of God, for self-realization. In Deva yajna, offerings are made to God with recitation of mantras. Atithi yajna is our treating the unexpected guest arriving in our house. Earlier people travelled long distances for pilgrimages etc., and depended on others for food and shelter. In Pitri yajna we remember our forefathers as a mark of respect, and feed people. In Balivaishva yajna, birds and animals are fed. In summer some of us provide clay pots having water for them. We feel happy when birds come, drink and take bath in water. Our understanding them, improves our bonding with them. But it is the nature, which takes care of other species. In yajna in general, we do our duty for good of all others, without self-interest. NATURE provides us sun, moon, rain, air, trees, flowers and raw materials etc. Once we take from nature, we should also give it back, in the policy of give and take. By our polluting air by smoke, water by throwing garbage, and wasting water, we are harming the living beings also. If nature is weak, we are weak. We have to make nature strong, by planting trees, saving water, and recycling etc. It is the duty of each and every one of us.
