WAYS OF NATURE FOR PREDICTING EARTHQUAKES
Frequently, earthquakes occur in some parts
of the world, kill and injure many persons and render a larger number as homeless. So far, we have not been able to make accurate predictions for
earthquakes. Times of India of May 26, 08 provides details of the hints of nature, for such impending disasters. These can be used for reducing loss of life. Scientists also appear to agree that animals can give some indications in this respect. Before the actual earthquake, physical and chemical signals emanating from the earth are sensed by the animals, which are sensitive to pressure waves. This is the most promising element in prospects of predicting. Examples of a number of previous earthquakes are given. Before the actual disaster took place, strange animal behavior like wild howling and barking was observed, but these peculiar signals were not understood by the human beings. In another case, frogs and toads left the quake site in thousands. Mice and snakes ran in the open, as if crazy. Horses and cows were also uneasy, and wanted to leave the stables. There were instances of water level in the region going down suddenly and then rising sharply again, just before the earthquake. Even the behavior of the people became irritable, confused and quarrelsome. In some cases, bright lights have been seen in the skies just before this event. All said and done, we all have to keep our eyes and ears open, to notice such
observations and act upon them.
