CHARITY SHOULD BENEFIT BOTH THE RECEIVER AND THE DONOR
Charity should be based on intellect, and not emotions. If possible, it should benefit both. It should cause the transformation of the receiver, to a life of service. This has been discussed on the editorial page of Times of India of Jul 17, 08.Generally we give when we have, or we are prosperous. It is said that, if we run after something including wealth, it runs away from us. If we leave it as it is, it follows us. We should work honestly, and its reward will come some day. We gain what we give away. More wealth makes us impure and decaying, while renunciation makes us pure. Social service for the poor and miserable persons is a noble work. While we do need scattered arrangements of social service, these will give only some pockets of relief. We do need an organized system of education and social consciousness. If this feeling is inculcated from the beginning, we will have a large number of persons, as social workers. We all should live together with other fellow human beings. The gigantic problem of poverty and misery can be resolved through mass education. The ancient philosophy of India, inculcates this spirit in human beings.
