Nagpur’s top Income Tax official held for disproportionate assets

The new item discloses that
the country’s top investigation agency does not arrest officials in the cases of disproportionate assets if the corruption level is not extensive. This itself shows the definite fault line in the government investigation agencies to tackle corruption in all government sectors.
The fact of the matter is that if all round investigations were being made on the IRS officers anywhere, a major chunk of those would be found corrupt.
Ajay Kumar Singh is the Indian Revenue Service officer in the income tax department, and is in the position of Commissioner at the Nagpur Division. He has been held by the CBI means that the corruption practice indulged by him is substantial. He was in the news earlier too for all wrong reasons. In spite of that, he got promotion, which should be investigated along with his own fraudulent practices. He has rupees five crores worth of assets, which he has invested in the names of his relatives, said CBI after initial investigation. The man who helped him in doing these wrongdoings is Kartik Kothari, a chartered accountant. Kothari is yet to be apprehended, sources said.
His promotion to the commissioner level was done by ignoring the serious malpractice charges against him. Before handing over the promotion, the department did not pay heed to the CBI’s information about him. His close connection with the higher authorities paved the way for his advancement in the service, CBI opined. The incident of he being slapped by another officer in the hotel Marine Plaza in 2004, when he had physical fight with one of his colleague at a get together there. The officer intervened later, slapped him, and dumped him in his official vehicle for taking him to home, revealed a fellow officer. In addition, there is confirmed report of a case filed by an informant against him, whom he threatened. The case is still going on.
