in India various combating measures taken are giving a ray of hope for HIV infected mothers.

HIV/AIDS Virus may be transmitted from a Mother to a child. It is the main cause for Pediatric AIDS in our country. Generally there are 30 percent chances of transmission from a mother to a child.

As per Mr. Prasad of Andhra Pradesh AIDS control society, 75 percent of the transmission to the child takes place from mother to child mode only.

However The stigma attached to the disease is gradually becoming weaker and more and more people are coming forward for HIV tests

Government has introduced Anti retroviral therapy at free of cost in all Government hospitals. There are nearly 1000 such centers in our country out of them 400 are in ANDHRA Pradesh state only. The therapy is successful in saving more than three fourth of the babies born to HIV mothers.

Under this therapy, pregnant women are tested for HIV and if found positive they are treated with NEVIRAPINE.

Asper Namrita a pediatrician, in cases where the medicine is not administered due to any reason to a pregnant woman, the caesarean delivery reduces the risk of a baby becoming infected

As per Dr. TLN Prasad nowadays, being a carrier of HIV virus is no more a taboo and more and more people are coming for HIV tests.

According to Isodore PHILLIPS OF “WHO FOR THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN” there is a need for community based rehabilitation of children infected with HIV. More extra attention of care should be given to them. From the field experience PHILLIPS says that there is a gap in the services offered to HIV infected children. He adds that a multiple strategy should be adopted to handle the issue

More over he is hopeful that the things will change in the near future because of the continued combating with the HIV/Aids disease. This is good for the country
