Nooyi more powerful than Sonia: Forbes published on page 1 of Times Of India, Hyderabad edition on 2.9.06.
It is heartening to know that five Indian
women have made it to the top 100 powerful women in the
world A-list of Forbes magazine. A very heart felt congratulations. What's common between Indra Nooyi, Sonia Gandhi, Lalitha Gupte, Kalpana Morparia and vidya Chhabria? It's the determination to excel in their respective fields. Except Sonia Gandhi, all the four are MBA's from reputed B-schools. Sonia Gandhi is just continuing a political legacy left over by the Nehru-Gandhi family. Except Sonia Gandhi the remaining are heading huge business organizations, their post in these organizations signify the changed mindset of the promoters of these entities.
Still, a good percentage of people in India feel that it is all hype and no substance. This is the world's largest democracy and everyone has the right to express his/her views. India is the 2nd largest country in terms of
population with about a third of the population being women. Even if 50 places are allotted to the rest of the world, 30% fof the remaining 50 i.e.,15 women from India should still make it to the top 100. Now, only one-third of the 15 have made it to the top 100 which is grossly insufficient. Agreed that it is quality that matters over quantity. Since, there is a vast gap in the thinking patterns of urban and
rural Indians, efforts should be made to educate the rural families. Once this is achieved, more and more women from the villages will make it to the higher schools and colleges of
education. The
government should be pro-active by enlisting social welfare and education schemes to the girl-child. This can made a reality as there are sufficient funds lying with the Government treasury which were collected from the public under the head education cess.
The matter lies with the de-facto head of the government, who is a woman figuring at no.13 of the Forbes list and she knows better how to do it.
