{Adult films may get late-night slot published on page 7)
Freedom of expression is a fundamental right guaranteed by
the Constitution of India, that was framed in 1948 and
amended from time to time.
film making is a much ancient
concept than framing the Constitution. Prior to
independance, film-making for cinema was in a nascent
stage. Even at that time, film-makers were willing to
experiment with different subjects that were futuristic.
In the past five and a half decades, India has developed in
many spheres viz., socially, scientifically and
economically. There is a similar growth in various
categories of film-making like art, commercial, children
and
Adult cinema. Film making in the present day is based
on economics. If the Producer and Financier think that they
can make money from an adult film, they are willing to
shoot it. Fire and Kamasutra are two good adult
movies that
could not be telecast on Television due to the policies of
the Government.
Some members of
Censor Board are hypocrites with
double standards. If you ask them a question as to
how a particular film is
categorised as an adult film,
there are evasive and circumventing replies. Some members
on condition of anonymity, say that portraying excessive
violence, erotic gestures in dance sequences by skimpily
clad female actors, obsessive kissing
scenes in tandem help
categorise a film as adult movie.
It is high time they wake up to the ground realities and
lift the culture veil. The soap operas shown on
Television on the hapless viewer can be categorised as
adult content because 90% of them show excessive violence,
intimate scenes and what not. Still there is no restraint
on the part of the censors and they are freely aired
throughout the day by the broadcasters. Then, why no not
the so called adult movies. In the modern day, there is a
video parlour in every street corner that rents
pornographic stuff even to children(though discreetly). The
suggestion made by the Censor Board Chief to have late
night slots for adult movies appears belated, what with the
people having access to Cable TV has also the access to the
video. Are you listening, Madam?
