students
lock horns over
ragging
issue reported on page 3 of Hyderabad Edition>
Let us seek answers to some fundamental questions. Why do
seniors
resort to ragging
juniors
? What is the age group of students resorting to ragging? Is the ragging activity a personality disorder?
In the state of Andhra Pradesh, 60% of students passing out of Class-x are from private schools where emphasis is on discipline. There is little or no freedom to the students when in school. The reasons are many. The private school managements
stress
on good academic performance as the results obtained by Class-X students directly affect their future admissions to the school.
PArents
are equally keen to see the names of their children in the newspaper's list of toppers. The next two years of education is equally important as the students are made to grind, for atleast 16 hours a day to get that coveted seat in Engineering/ Medical college.
What's happening in these three crucial years of adolscence? The students are building reserves of stress in their body and they are searching for an outlet to relieve the stress. The moment students take admission to a graduate/ professional course, it is felt by them that they are free to do anything they like.
It is to be observed that three crucial years of adoloscence (15-18 years of age) are spent only on academics with no formal training of
communication
skills or physical exercise. Is it fair to expect them to be responsible citizens, behaving normally without indulging in maladies like ragging when the people responible for their behaviour viz., school management, teachers and parents are looking the other way?
Ragging can be categorised into two viz., mild and harsh. Mild ragging is a light hearted banter where the senior is essentially trying to know the likes & dislikes, hobbies etc., of the juniors. This kind of ragging really helps not only in bonding but also in academics where the seniors mentor the juniors in selection of project work and career opportunities.
Harsh ragging is a personality disorder exhibited by the seniors where sadistic overtones can be felt like social and sexual abuse and outraging the modesty of the juniors. It is better for the college managements to have a psycho-analyst on the faculty to curb this form of ragging to some extent.
An anti-ragging act and punishment like suspension will not act as a deterrent for these young minds. The solution lies in the over all development of the children during teenage, in all sphers of life like sports, cultural activities, socialising and development of communication skills. REgular counselling by the parents during adolscence improves the bonding between the parent and the child and when there is a regular communication, stress is reduced to the bare minimum. If this becomes a reality, the tendency of ragging might disappear.
