(India under attack from Heart diseases, Pg.1, Hyderabad Edition)WHO had found out that, by 2012 nearly 50% of all the heart
attacks in the world can be suffered by Indians. Everybody knows that the conventional reasons for a
heartattack are fatty food, lack of exercise, smoking, high Blood Prssure, diabetes, stress and unhealthy lifestyles. But, these does not explain why only Indians are at risk. Are there genetically motivated factors? Well, there aren't any breakthroughs yet. These results have a working class skew, specifically the urban category. The problem can be addressed in two directions. The first one is to leave the problem to reasearch scientists, and wait for the scientific breakthroughs. It may take time as clinical trials have to be conducted over a wide spectrum of volunteers from different background, to arrive at a proper solution. The process involves spending lot of money on research: funds may not be a problem as there are sponsors from the pharma industry. The second direction is a bit unconventional one similar to a Chinese model. Mandatory lifestyle changes by bringing in legislations may help. If most of the executive class
employees travel my metro trains, get down at the nearest railway station, wither walk or pedal a bicycle to reach the office, the metabolic activity increases. The result is better circulation of blood in the body and a reduced risk of heart attack. If the Government gives some income tax sops to the people who either walk or bicycle their way to work, like in Boulder, U.S.A the overall health of the employee will improve.A radical approach on the part of the employees would be to use two mobile phones with one number exculsively for office and another for non-office use. Never disclose the personal number to the office and switch off the office number after office hours. Leaving laptops at office, after office hours would help. We should work to live and not vice versa.
