ANURAGAT VIRAGH-DETACHMENT According Saint Mahaveera
non-violence, compassion, sociability and peaceful co-existence are the kinds of love par-excellence. As regards ‘Worldly Affairs’ the word ‘love’ means ‘desire’ for attachment to and ‘longing ‘ for body or material objects. A thread of love exists between two individuals. An institution of family is not possible without physical urge. In other words, the mother can not shower her affection on her children. Thus this love, no doubt, creates a ‘
bond’ on what is constituted and seen as
‘duality’. Even though physical love is a part family bondage it can not be ‘absolute love’, because the family bondage ends up with
conflicts and
malice. Though it can not be a ‘pure kind of love’, it is very essential for sustenance of life. We can name this love as ‘mine-ness’ or ‘
possessiveness’ or ‘mamatva’.. According to Mahaveera’s philosophy we can categorize the
‘possessiveness’ into 1. Love for body, 2.Love for material objects and 3. Imprints of past actions on consciousness. The first two belong to ‘possessiveness’ and the third one belongs to
‘high esteem’ or
‘implicit love’-‘mine-ness’ or possessiveness which will always be attached with sense of ‘fear’ viz., a fear of something going wrong which may affect ‘body’ or whatever one has may disappear one day or the other. In other words in Mamatva happiness and suffering will come alternatively in one’s life. Implicit love or
‘spiritual love’ on the other hand involves one’s total surrender into the ideal. Here such person will not have any attachment to worldly affairs. Hence, such person will have happiness only and not sufferings arising out of attachment of worldly affairs. This is akin to the snakes run away at once from the Sandalwood trees on seeing the Peacocks coming. The ‘implicit love’ can be implied as ‘absolute love’ and it generates happiness only. On other hand, humility i.e.,
‘explicit love’ with total
submission to the ideal makes one forgo his
‘ego’. This wider affection with truly develops
‘ultimate supreme welfare’-detachment is born out of affection. Worldly affairs lead to
delusion and ‘pure consciousness’ leads to
ultimate love emanating from
dissolution of delusion. This detachment is known as ‘
Anuragat Viragh’. Thus the detachment arises out of affection. Materialistic love or attachment is necessary for sustenance of life,
total submission and
embracing love without ego is very essential for fulfillment of
genuine and implicit love which has strong footing on the
mind. How can the love dominated by the worldly affairs and the renunciation exist together? Here we should know that the detachment towards materialism is the resultant of attachment towards consciousness. Bodily love ends up with problems whereas spiritual love ends up with consciousness of ‘karma’-past actions.
Renunciation of worldly attachment and
‘sublimation’ are the ’
cornerstones of Mahaveera’s philosophy. A wise man looks upon
‘life’ as mere
‘dew drop’ that quivers upon the tip of a blade of Kusa grass to be whisked away by the breeze at any moment
