Today The Sunday Times is a weighty newspaper: sold In Ireland and the UK: There are many items of interest: I was especially interested in Helen Mirren's 60 Birthday - a feature which mentions the actress and her career!
She is referred to as /Miss Mirren at 60/ : doubtless her sixtieth birthday will be a memorable event as its much praised in the Sunday Times.
I was in Belfast several years ago and I bumped into Jeremy Paxman the well known Journalist! He had been out there covering /The Good Friday Agreement/ and Gerry Adams side of the political divide! In this newspaper
Jeremy Paxman is revealing his family tree which appears to be Scottish! His ancestors all hail from the
tenements of Glasgow or thereabouts: his family are decent citizens who spent their formative years in the Poor Houses of Britain: and large numbers of his /clan/ I assume have emigrated to Canada: His dazzling career on television and in reporting seems to have fallen out of fashion and he is back to back with FINDING ROOTS but fights shy of his own success in Journalism and in life! Again, I was returning from Prague and bumped into Jeremy Paxman again: there was terrible security fuss at London Heathrow Airport and it seemed to me Mr Paxman was in the /thick of it/: the photographs are harrowing! Grim workhouse establishments juxtaposed with illustrious ancestors in the military field:His great grandmother had been widowed and left to bring up nine
children in
poverty - their's was a tragic story!
We used to say, /leave well enough alone/ but then I
suppose if your job depends on /digging up the dirt/ then doing the same for your own kith and kin is nothing to write home about: its as easy as pie!
Fashion news is /very British/: the long skirted model with her beautifully coiffeured hair shakes us up in the run up to Christmas parties and Religious Services: Speaking of Religious Services: Britain's Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor writes /A Life in the Day/ which has always been one of my favourite features of The Sunday Times! Its interesting to note the habits of the Catholic Clergy in England : the Cardinal listens to the radio (indeed so do I!) and in particular his favourite radio show is /Desert Island Discs/his ancestry is Irish and his father was the eldest of nine children: those old families still prevail to this day, in the Ireland of his memories:
The nuns make him tea! He enjoys eating Special K and loves a cup of coffee: he has a sweet tooth! Haven't we all! Its a lovely
anecdotal story about the eminent Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor!
Bill Clinton is popular in the Sunday Times dated: Dec 11 05, and he is strongly opposing Mr Bush's environmental policy - while campaigners march in Montreal!
Power Play: Driving: Business add to the already well packaged information: I suppose I shoult stop here but I will continue to add the comment: Are we on the crest of a wave or are we ladies and gentlemen of leisure! Savings 5.10 per cent - northern rock - strictlly limited issues - Seasons Greetings!
