VAN GOGH WORK SOLD BY AUCTION FOR 36 MILLION DOLLARS
An important picture of Van Gogh was struck yesterday to the auction at Christie's in New York for 36 million dollars. “The Arlesienne, Madame Ginoux”, one of the last portraits by the artist still in private hands, have not caught up the minimum of the departure esteem that was of 40-50 million dollars. The buyer is an anonymous collector and has carried to the final price of the picture in some heading carried out by telephone.
The picture has been described from the house of auctions like one of the most important of the series of five oil paintings on canvas with the same subject of the period 1888/90.
In the 1888 Vincent Van Gogh left Paris and moved to Arles, in the South of France, where after some months went to live in the “Yellow House”, a dwelling where he will paint and where hoped to establish one community of artists. For all the year, Vincent painted some of its better works. Also his friend Paul Gauguin, helped him to constitute the community of the artists, living together in the “Yellow House”. This period, in which they debate continuously of art, even if frequently stiff, were revealed rewarding and fruitful for both of them. After some months their relation got worse completely until a presumed attack of Van Gogh towards Gauguin with a blade.
After the failed attack, lost Vincent the reason and the lobe of the left ear was cut. It wrapped therefore in newsprint and of it made gift to a prostitute of the local brothel, where he attended.
As a result of these events the artist came interned in the lunatic asylum of the zone. When he was in a position to making it, Vincent continued to paint its landscapes (between which the series, most famous, of the small wood of olives tree and the cypresses) in lunatic asylum, but it was obliged to stop when its attacks (in the course of which it tries to poison itself ingesting his colors) came back. These attacks often takes place when he found himself in the open air, Vincent went autonoumos to the asylum. Madame Marie Ginoux, the subject of the work, was the owner of the Cafe de the Contests, a premises attended from Gauguin and Van Gogh during the permanence in Arles. In the picture the woman, is reading some stories.
The auction of Christie's has inaugurated the season of the spring sales to New York. After the Van Gogh it is the time of a Picasso, place to the auction from Sotheby's: the portrait “Dora Maar with the painted cat” . It represents the lover of the painter with a cat on the shoulder and came painted in 1941. Sotheby's will leave from the equal minimal price to 50 million dollars.
With the rights of auction, the Van Gogh was cost to the anonymous collector 40,3 million dollars: only others three pictures of the Dutch painter cost more than this on the market of the auctions.
