I refer to the article on the looming mail regulation revisions. The article referred to statements made by the Acting Post
Master General, Michael Gentles at the The Gleaner/Power 106FM News Centre. According to the Acting Postmaster General, these changes have become more necessary due to increasing terror threats with the most recent foiled plot in London.
Changes would be applied to the package delivery section where customers may be required not to seal packages until inspected by the Customer Service Personnel at the Post Office.
Recently changes were made to prohibit travellers from taking certain items on board airplanes which PMG Gentles said is likely to have an impact on the package delivery system as well.
This
article struck me because excepting for those Jamaicans who have travelled recently and were exposed to the more stringent measures at check points in both local and Uniteed States Airports, there are countless Jamaicans who have been unaffected by these recent developments. In many ways our world has been undisturbed and it has been business as usual. Not so for those who had to leave their lotions, had their baby formula checked and who themselves felt as though they were under suspicion.
It would seem prudent to me thought that the Post Office find a way to incorporate the cost of sealing those packages into the cost of postage. It would be way more tedious and time consuming a process to ensure that customers do not add items to their packages after inspection. I challenge the Jamaican postal system to step up to the plate of practicality and professionalism. Offer a first class service; one that is efficient and effective in ensuring that Jamaica meets safety and security regulations. After all it's the least we can do as we strive to elevate ourselves.
