debate on link between HIV and circumcission.
Africa is the most affected continent by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The number of deaths caused by HIV related illness is very high and the number of children orphaned by aids is parthetic.Africa''s disparity to
reduce the number of deaths and new HIV infections calls for adoption of any hopeful strategy.
The debate of whether
circumcision could stop the spread of HIV should stop by now.
Studies commissioned by the Kenya, Ugandan and South African governments have confirmed earlier studies by the South African government that indicated that circumcision could reduce the chances of contracting HIV for men. The studies show that circumcision could halve men’s vulnerability to HIV from having sex with infected women. the
attitude change plan based on the studies indicate that circumcision can significantly reduce chances of contracting HIV by as much as 60%.this could save hundreds of thousands of peoples lives.
These facts are enough to convince all the doubting Thomases out there. All those
people who doubt this just because it is not part of their customary practice should change their attitude. The studies can also be backed by the fact that for example the most affected regions by HIV
infection in Kenya, are those areas where the resident communities don’t practice circumcision. Furthermore circumcision has been playing a big role in the prevention of spread of STD’S for along time and no one has ever debated on this.
These peoples argument that circumcision alone can not reduce the spread of HIV is true. But so does condoms since they can not stop all ways of infection and yet they have been implemented as strategies of preventing new infection. A policy should be implemented to include circumcision in the HIV prevention strategy all over the world and especially in Africa.
People should help change the attitude of those who are against circumcision for the sake of saving thousands of lives. Local communities need to change some of their beliefs which are not concurrent with the dynamism of the current life style.
Circumcision could be the best solution for reduction of new HIV infection but this strategy can only be effective if people change their attitude and initiation of lots of awareness campaigns.
