NEW DRUG FOR BLINDNESS Researchers have come up with a drug called Robo4, a protein that tackles two of the leading causes of
BLINDNESS known as Macular degeneration and Diabetic retinopathy.
Blood
vessel damage of the eye, with its related conditions, has led to
sight loss. This is a major cause of blindness in the United States. It is a well-established fact that Macular degeneration and Diabetic retinopathy are two of these conditions associated with blood vessel damage. Both of these types of eye problems, which are common in older people, involve both leakage of blood
vessels within the eye, and formation of new and abnormal blood vessels. Robo4, when activated in a body system, appears to correct these problems by developing stable, working blood vessels, thereby reducing cases of sight loss. When the protein was activated in mice breed, the researchers saw that the blood vessel damage was prevented, and in some cases reversed.
However, this drug has not been proved to work in humans. It is believed that it will take a number of years before a working drug can be provided for patients. Not only are there doubts about its effectiveness in humans, but there are also questions about the drug’s side effects when used in humans.
Nevertheless, scientists are excited about this great invention. The drug is viewed as a major breakthrough that will open doors to other inventions and modifications in the field of science.
