IF YOU WERE HENRY DUNUNT..... ?
ON June 24, 1859, a tragedy was to awaken the sleeping giant of a man named Henry Dununt. The place was Solferino, a town in northern Italy, where French and Italian troops had been engaged in a fiece battle against the occupying Austrian forces , which was to leave 40,000
wounded and dead in just a few hours.
The medical services of th armies inviolved were inadequate to cope with the situation and the wounded were abandoned to their fate. The speectacle of their suffering appalled a visiting swiss businessman named Henry Dununt, who set about helping them regardless of their nationality, calling on the local population to join him.
On his return to switzerland, Henry Dununt related the tragedy he had just witnessed in a book entitled "A Memory of Solferino", in which he suggested:" would it not be possible, in
time of peace and quite,to form relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in war time? An idea led to the creation of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
There are things that happen in our every day activities and because of " hustling and bustling" we fail to recognise them. There are events, if given proper attention, would change the face of the world. We do not need to wait until something bad happens before we take action.Tht is the tre nd of things in our
society these days. It''s only when something bad
happens that one would
remember to set up a foundation.
Now, lets think and talk positive.Do you know that opportunities abound everyday? Some people see the
hole in the
doughnut without seeing the doughnut without seeing the doughnut, while others see the doughnut without seeing the hole. It''s only very few that sees the doughnut and the hole.Peiple will always see problem without seeing an opportunity in it. I remember hearing the story about a period a certain mortuary had a breakdown of some of its facilities. Then resultant effect was the announce ment for people to come and reclaim bodies deposited in the mortuary. Those not claimed on time had acid poured on them to reduce the air contamination and possi ble outbreak of diseases.
While all these were going on, a retired general began to ask: is there no way one could provide an alter native service? And that led to the establishment of a private morgue, which began to provide services urgently needed by the society.
