REDUCING ROAD CARNAGE IN OUR SOCIETY
Road carnage in our modern times has been a recurring event that reduces lives, especially, to ashes. It has turned a growing phenomena that renders untold plights to commuters. It has now become a muiti-faces snare catching both the rich and the poor.
For instance, it`s snare at the road - land travel, a snare to seas and high seas - water travel, and has gone up to the former known safety and cosy means of transport - Areoplane, - Air travel. One aboards any chosen menas of transport these days with mixed feeling and palpitating of the heart.
The causes of the problem has been outlined by the writer here, but I found out that the thing is bedeiled with geaographical or regional problems in addition. Apart from the general problem it has, there are some regional problems that are also causing the incessant roads mishaps. The effects of the road traffic accident is also enormous that even in U.K. more than 3,000 were recorded have been a victim. And estimated 30 million people killed in it world wide since the invention of motor vehicle. One funy thing is that this defies sophistication of the human mind and road net-work technology. If not, the effect would not have been at all at U.K., USA, and all other developed world.
Among the many causes of road traffic accidents, some of them are: Drink driving: Alcoholic drinks is still a major cause of car crashes world over. that is, it is universal problem. About 96 percent of commercial drivers are alcoholic adict. One driver was quoted said that unless the present crop of drivers now are forced to stop drinking and smoking intoxicating wine and marijuana and other related drugs that all the efforts put toward stopping accident in our roads will not bear any fruit.
When one becomes guilty of the above reason, it renders him careless. So many are careless over their cars/motors to the extent of not carrying out the normal routing check of lubricant, tyres etc. every morning. some go out with warned out tyres.
Over speed is another major killing problem. Many people - Drivers - think speeding is a mark of excellent driving, but it is not, for when it becomes uncontollable, accidents occure. Some drivrs say it is bad road. But I put in here that bad road in the extent of pot-holes, bumps, untarred roads cannot cause accident rather it delays the time-target. It is the expressway where no hinderance whatsoever exists, that drivers go on a break-neck speed.
On the regional level, the developing world, it is worst hit. This is as a result of corruption and hardship. And beause people have chosen to sacrifice their consciences on the altar of selfish gains. The practice of taking money from a prospective learner-driver and issue him license is at rampamt. This shows that most of our youth drivers never for one day attended driving schools. They are ingnorant of road signs and highway codes and go on reckless speed with unhealthy vehicles.
Another problem in this is that most law enforcement agents in this sector compromise principles and ethic of profession. And a rigorous checks and cautions that is needed to be applied to a culprit driver is dropped in place of some gratifications.
The writer suggested many remedies which include: Headband - a wear, Death markers, Design and roadside objects, Refresher courses, Lower speed limit, and Go-slow car, the later which he said that experts at the University of leeds are working on a car equiped with a speed limiter, which makes it impossible to break the legal limit. Professor of transport safety, Oliver Carstern said "we believe this kind of technology can contribute to road safety"
In conclusion, while we are waiting for the professor`s break-through to come to market, it is advicable that both Drivers and traffic law regulating agents should step up to wear honesty and patriotism to save us from further mess and heart failure because of death or loss of one`s loved one or helper.
