Re: Nigerians in Diaspora list tasks for Bankole
Some of Nigerians in Diaspora that spoke on the crisis that recently rocked the house of representatives that lead to the emergence of Dimeji Bankole as the new speaker, though they all did justice to the matter in the article titled “Nigerians in Diaspora list tasks for Bankole” published in the guardian news paper dated 15th of November 2007.however they all failed to list the tasks or discuss how the major issue that produced Mr. speaker can be tackled from the root because corruption Nigeria has become a deep rooted timber that will be difficult to just uproot. The major cause of corruption in Nigeria as we all know is not only the self centered nature of our leaders but also that of us the followers, as long as one and ones family are doing fine every other thing around us becomes insignificant. The next paragraph is a summary of the said tasks stated in the article.
Oladele, a US-based lawyer made it clear that Bankoles election into the exalted office is still an imposition and not a free will election, according to him most of the members that voted him to the office are members of the same political party while stating examples of scandalous resignations like that of president Nixon’s water gate mess that the former speaker could have use as an example and step aside ontime.Dr. Chamberlain peterside, a US –based financial advisor seem to have a different opinion though, as he stated that the ascension to the speaker position of Bankole underscores the ongoing generational transition. but to think of it , is this transition going to bode down well for Nigeria or is it just going to be the emergence of a set of youthful, more skillful, more talented and more dynamic Adedibus of tomorrow? However, Salisu Abdullahi, the president of the zumunta Association said he was relieved and encouraged based on Bankoles age, education, business and political experience and his (Salisu) investigation on his (Bankole) character and that he was elected by a clear majority of his colleagues and was not imposed but Bukola Oreofe, the PRONACO-US secretary said that he has adopted a wait and see attitude while expressing lack of confident on the political system that produced Bankole.
All the speakers except Salisu Abdullahi focused on other issues apart from making suggestions as to what and what should be the major agenda for the new speaker. however the new speaker should not see this position as a very big one and as such see him self as a servant of the people and not their master, he should also make sure that the house of representatives carry out it legislative duties as at when due paying particular attention to the nations economy, education, health care, agriculture, security, job creation and above all, transparent leadership in all arms of the government and even to the political parties.
In conclusion, I think the fundamental problem of our dear nation is not in our leaders but with everybody, come to think of it even if our leaders are good and we the followers are bad then the leaders are not good and also if the followers are good and the leaders are bad then the followers are not good in either ways it boils down to collective efforts. We as followers can’t just be criticizing; we need to take positive actions in the right direction. I will also commend the effort s of the integrity group in the house of representatives for their good sense of judgment and urge them to “start their charity in their house” which I think they have started.
