I REGRET CONTESTING FOR GOVERNORSHIP POLLS-MASARI
Former Speaker,of Nigeria''''s House of Representatives, Aminu Masari says he regrets ever wanting to be Governor of Katsina State. Masari, who was speaking for the first time since he left office as the Speaker, spoke on a personality programme in Abuja. He was the Speaker, House of
Representatives between June 2, 2003 to June 2, 2007.

He admitted that as a human being, he made a mistake by not coming back to the House as a lawmaker rather than contesting for the governorship in the state. Masari noted that the painful aspect of it was that the `power that be'''' prevented him from entering the race as he was not allowed to participate in the
primaries.

He said inspite of the fact that he was the number four citizen in the nation''''s hierarchy and a member of PDP national caucus, a clique disallowed him
from running. He however said, coming back to the House would have caused some discomfort to some people as he would be an ordinary floor member.

Masari said that being a former speaker, his personality and presence in the House might be misconstrued as having over bearing influence on the
new leadership. He said his people persuaded him to run for the governorship race so as to be able to render additional service to them.

The former Speaker said he did a lot to the people of his Kafur/Malumfashi federal constituency of Katsina in the areas of roads, potable water, rural electricity among others.

According to him,``If what I stand for was the reason that I was prevented from entering the race, then I would never be allowed to contest because I would not change my stand,'''''''' .

Speaking on the crisis that engulfed the House after his exit on the renovation of Speaker''''s residence, Masari said he was highly embarrassed as it ought
not to have occurred in the first place. He said presiding officers should have nothing to do with contracts and renovation of institutional houses as that
was not their responsibility.

On the debate over the controversial constitutional amendment on tenure elongation, Masari said he was on the side of the people in line with the dictates of the constitution.
