A forum in Abuja attended by the minister of
education Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili and more than one thousand female
students from twenty eight states out of the thirty six states recently deliberated extensively on the issue of
sexual harassment.Tagged THE CHILDREN SPEAK EDUCATION OF OUR DREAM,the forum condemned in totality the act of sexual harssment in schools.
male teachers who should act in loco parentis for pupils and students feast on
thier ignorance and naivity and make sexual advancement on the pupils and students.The appeal of an eleven year old primary school pupil was an eye opener "Please Madam minister ,tell the male teachers to stop harassing female students.Tell them to leave us alone to study.Tell the male teacherts that we are in school to learn and not to be sexually intimidated and harssed.We need good education not sex" .Sexual harassment of female minors even with the promise of marriage amount to professional misconduct and abuse of trust by teachers and is punishable under the law.It is a clear manifestation of the collapse of morality.It expose the abused children to HIV,AIDS diseases and Vesico VAGINAL Fistula.The government and the federal ministry of education should act promptly on the issue even as the minister promised to act headlong.The odds are many,school administrators should develop a framework for monitoring teachers and thier relationship with pupils.Parents should also be actively involved in the campaign against sexual harassment in schools.It is improper for parents to leave thier children in schools without monitoring thier activities.All allegations of sexual harassment should be duly investigated.Any male teacher found wanting should be severely punished to serve as a deterent to others.School children should be instructed to report cases of harassment to appropriate authorities.
