German escapes from Nigeria to evade justice
A German, named Wolfang Bunde, played a fast one on nigeria and her citizens,
escaping Nigeria, despite the seizure of his
international passport. He is to face trial over an alleged N70 million fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) hammer a six-count criminal charge on Bunde before Justice Mufutau Olokooba of the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, but the German has fled to escape justice.
Besides his alleged role in the N70 million fraud over a hoax purchase and supply of a dredging machine to one Tony Thomas for which he was jointly charged with one Abraham Adanye, Bunde is also being slammed for issuing a dud cheque.Following the complaint lodged with the EFCC via a petition, Bunde was arrested, detained and later charged to the court by the EFCC after a prima-facie case has been established against him and Adanye.
However, on April 8, 2009 when he was to be docked, Bunde was without a counsel, prompting the court to postpone his arraignment, so that he could have access to a legal practitioner of his choice to defend him. Also, the poor state of his health made the court to grant him permission to remain in the EFCC custody.
Justice Muftau Olokooba, directed that Bunde should remain with the EFCC instead of sending him to prison custody because of the poor state of his health. Bunde who was later release by the EFCC (to avoid an international embarrasement) to attend to his health problem after finding themselve in a dilemma after checking on his blood pressure which have shut up to an alrming proportion.
Following his release, Bunde immediately had an appointment with Julius Berger Clinic at Ijora, Lagos on April 20, 2009. While the nature of the diagnosis carried out on the 419 suspect could not be ascertained, investigations, however, revealed that Bunde allegedly obtained another passport from the German embassy immediately he left EFCC’s custody to aid his escape from justice.
When contacted, Bunde’s attorney, Wahab Shittu, who had completed the German’s bail process was shocked when he learnt that his client had bolted out of the countryA German, named Wolfang Bunde, played a fast one on nigeria and her citizens, escaping Nigeria, despite the seizure of his international passport.
