i have read some news article in msn i found out that President Gloria Arroyo has sacked the Philippine prisons chief over
the premature release of a prominent politician serving 16 years in
jail for having sex with a child, officials said Thursday. Former
House of Representatives member Romeo Jalosjos walked out of the
national
prison compound in southern Manila under unexplained
circumstances on Saturday, shortly after the justice department
rejected a parole board
recommendation for his early release. Bureau
of Corrections chief Ricardo Dapat was sacked on Wednesday after
Jalosjos was recaptured in the southern city of Dapitan, said Dapat's
successor Oscar Calderon. "I will make sure that as Bureau of
Corrections head nobody will escape and everybody will follow the
rules," said Calderon, who retired from his post as Philippine police
chief two months ago. Jalosjos, a 67 year-old political ally of
Arroyo, was convicted in 1996 for having sex with an 11-year-old girl,
which is statutory rape under Philippine law. He had had his
original sentence of two life terms in prison shortened earlier this
year for good behaviour, but the justice department has since overruled
a parole board recommendation to free Jalosjos on December 16. Dapat,
the sacked prisons chief, insisted he was made a "sacrificial lamb" to
deflect criticism of the government's presumed lenient treatment of
Jalosjos. He denied that he had authorised Jalosjos to leave
the prison. The former legislator had claimed he was released by the
prison authorities.
