A baby named Angela was born last February 28, 2009 to Bona Franco and Nestor Estaniel from Sipalay, Negros Occidental with
only one eye on her forehead. The parents of the baby were shocked upon knowing that their baby was unfortunate enough to be born with an
unusual congenital defect. Having an eye in the forehead was dubbed as “cyclops baby” and that the baby has no nose, and endures an
underdeveloped skullcap.
The one-year old eldest child of the Estaniels named Nielben was born healthy with no physical defects. The father of the baby was shocked on such condition since her wife was reportedly fine during pregnancy. While being pregnant, Bona Estaniel never took any drugs or substance that could harm the baby. The fact that the baby would not live long made the Estaniels grieve.
The birth of the “cyclops baby” never happened in the area for 21 years as stated by the midwife who assisted Bona Estaniel. According to a neurology website, the condition of baby Angela is called Cyclopia which is caused by holoprosencephaly. Holoprosencephaly is a failure of the embryo’s forebrain to subdivide the orbits of the eyes into two holes while it is developing in the mother’s womb.
