Diversity creates productivity

Those that believe that unproductivity stems from cultural and ethnic diversities are hugely mistaken. Cultural differences are blamed for miscommunication, not completing a task on time, or by the requestors’ standards. The striking factor is the total ignorance of cultural differences lead stereotypes towards racial discrimination.

Like many misnomers, unproductivity is usually placed in the same category as laziness. This is not the case. Unproductivity is an extension of your home life, and encapsulates the lack of happiness; trust in oneself; low self esteem and self worth; personal problems; financial constraints; loneliness; and not having a clear direction. It is therefore not a cultural issue, but rather the inability of divorcing your personal life from your work life.

Having the looming knowledge that you have to tolerate a home life that you cannot, or do not want to face can depress anyone. Conversely, it is not about accepting the hand you have dealt, or making the best of it; but rather fixing the core of the problem.

Many individuals forget about the important things in life and are overwhelmed by a perceived belief of being the worst off. However, if you take the focus off the problem(s) at hand, and look at the bigger picture, you’ll see that life actually has more to offer. Like many things, living is taken for granted. But when was the last time you woke up believing that you will have a good day, stopping to physically smell the flowers, acknowledging a smile for a stranger, taking time out to look at your surroundings or even listening to a child laugh?

Unfortunately, people separated their work from living and this blend backs into the home environment. It is a known fact that people have fun when their lifestyle is diverse. Diversity can be compared to a rainbow. If there was only one colour, it would be boring. Boredom kills joy, inspiration and is extremely limiting. If you work in a colourful environment, you automatically have a sense of happiness which ultimately manifests joy to the company at large. Relaxed companies are more productive than ‘suit and tie’ organisations, as people that are treated as individuals know that their scope is limitless. To this end, diversity is the key to energy which is the key to profit.

A key example is that of CEO of Semco, Ricardo Semler. He succeeded while breaking all the traditional business rules.

Semler eliminated what he called 'corporate oppression’ from his company. Clocks, dress codes, security procedures, privileged office spaces and perks were abolished. There were also no receptionists or secretaries. He set up 'factory committees' to run the plants. In an attempt to get more worker involvement, he guaranteed that no-one would be fired while serving on the committees, or for at least a year afterwards.

He then introduced profit-sharing schemes for all the workers. The idea of being able to directly influence their own pay encouraged the committees to look for savings and to question any procedures or layers of management that didn't seem to add value. Managers were hired and fired by their own employees. Semco grew due to the initiatives of its workers.

The employees also have unrestricted access to all corporate records and were taught to read financial reports. They also set their own wages and their own production quotas.

Even though this was exercise was performed overseas, it could and should be implemented in all companies. Go back to basics. Have respect for both the employees and the employers. This will ensure everyone has a fighting chance in this ‘dog eats dog’ world. Be creative, open, honest, productive, share ideas and commit to your sense of perfection. It will be amazing how a happy work life will influence a personal one, and visa versa. Write your abstract here.
