When resident in Belfast there are many sorts of newspapers to read in English Irish German Russian Czech French and not least Turkish ... so imagine my surprise when one day in my Villa which I owned incidentally, someone in London popped me a copy of Hurriyet and in fact a whole
pile of copies of Hurriyet were delivered ...... well it was a little bit pre Internet and I had to rush out and buy a Turkish dictionary at the University Book Store and come back home that afternoon sort out my lodgers and get down to
translation .... in fact I was good at it but it was just a hobby and I got back to the real activity of teaching and tutoring locally at the University.
Hurriyet I discovered several years later ....... and then resident in Istanbul a far cry from the
streets of Belfast in Northern Ireland ... it was explained to me by my Turkish Boss and
friend .. is a well known
newspaper in Turkish in Turkey. Up to that point everyone had relied exclusively on my translations some of course would claim that they were meagre .... others would embellish .. but my former Boss and friend took me through a daily programme of translation and literal culture in relation to this
great Turkish Newspaper ... Hurriyet .... on sale in the bookstores and newspapers stands on the streets of Istanbul in Turkey. Great
reading and translation in those bygone days .. keep on reading and translating Hurriyet!
