Its a funny old world but today at the local post office a gentleman pushed into my back
and said .... "How's about it" "Step in front of me, I am not in a hurry" ...
I replied: Well, darn me! I have read Hurriyet ... is that what you mean?!
In fact years ago, I was in my Villa in Ireland and I got up to answer the
postman and found lying there on the doormat a
copy of the
Turkish Newspaper "Hurriyet". I know I had a pile of foreign
dictionaries on my shelf but unfortunatly I didnt have a Turkish
dictionary, so I put on my walking boots and walked briskly
up the the University Book Store and bought a small Turkish
Dictionary.
I arranged to have a "Free"
day at the weekend, as my
tenants were
out at work or appearing on television locally! I had the house to myself
and got down to it ... looking up major themes and obvious verbal
links became a hobby rather than a chore.
At the end of the day I had made a
lot of sense of the copy of
Hurriyet Newspaper in Turkish. Someone had said to me
at a coffee morning that it was as easy as pie if you know what I mean ... and
a lot like German. Well I have taught German Theatre at
home so had
a background in it ... but then I felt qualified to do it. Dont let that stop you ...
my friends urged me to continue ... so I did.
There was a lot of local information on Tourism and Holiday Homes in
Turkey ... well, that surely must grab your attention. I enthused with
my colleagues, and before you could say "Hello in Turkish" I had
done the translation to their satisfaction.
All because somebody or other had popped this Newspaper/Hurriyet
in Turkish through my mail box ... I often wondered if it had been
intended for my tenants! I never did find out ... they proved too
busy to bother too much. Well, then to cut a long story short,
it was addressed to my home, and since I was the owner I
took full responsibility for receiving that ancient copy of
Hurriyet a Turkish Newspaper ... all those years ago!
Excellent stuff! ... Keep on reading ... Hurriyet!
