UGANDA PAYS TANZANIA $67 MILLION FOR AMIN WAR DEBT
DAILY MONITOR April 11, 2007

Almost 28 years after the over thrown of Idi Amin one of Africa’s famous dictators the country is still trying to shake off effects of his bad legacy. Amin’s regime is accused of killing between 300,000 -500,000 Ugandans in his eighth year rule of terror. Amin fled to exile after his regime was overthrow on April 11, 1979 and died on august 16, 2003 in Jeddah Saudi Arabia after living 24 years in exile.
Uganda has however cleared $67 MILLION debt owed to Tanzania for its part in helping in the overthrown of Idi Amin. The money was meant to cover Tanzanian property destroyed when Idi Amin government invaded Tanzania, cover equipment by Tanzania people’s defense forces against Amin. According to Uganda debt network (UDN) several external debts were incurred in the war against Amin. $ 100 million was found to be owed to Libya for its part in helping Amin try to beat off the successful Tanzania offensive and $35 million to Yugoslavia. However UDN feels the money to Tanzania should not been paid because this debt was contacted by liberation groups not recognized law and they were waging a war against a legitimate Uganda government at the time.
That said Ugandans will never forget the sacrifice and solidarity of the people of Tanzania in helping to overthrow the government of Amin.
