What’s in your
sandwich?
Millions of us each day eat pre-packed bought sandwiches that are not as healthy as they are made out to be. A report was published by the consumer association in their magazine WHICH. They found that the most popular sandwiches that are being sold in our large major supermarkets and chain stores, is the ‘chicken mayo’. Their investigations found that these delicious succulent, ‘off the shelf’ sandwich were pumped full of
additives, stabilisers and emulsifiers. The manufacturers claim that the chemicals and flavourings are needed to improve, ‘succulence and texture’ unquote. Nothing is mentioned about shelf life of the product by the use of the additives. The critic state that the customers are being misled into thinking that their sandwich are as whole-some and fresh on that day. The
ingredients that goes into the making, are now found too be full of preservatives such as the ‘High E
numbers’. These are additives that have been
approved for use in food making in the U.K. which help keep ingredients bound together. The opinion is that the E factor, approved for use here and the E.U. are not stringent enough on there testing of the products. Indeed some schools banned E numbers from menus, reported improvement on student’s behaviour. However there are some innocent E numbers, for example beetroot
juice is E101 and lemon juice is E 162, where as mayonnaise with thickener and preservatives are as high as E1422, E260, and E202. This is quite high on the
list of additives usually the producers state the E factor’s used in such small print that the consumer’s don’t bother to read the list of ingredients. Some skimp on the information altogether disclosing only the amount of chicken in the sandwich, while others disclose only the basic information such as salt and fat levels.
