Psychologies

Newspaper Review by: Lianne

Psychologies is a new women's monthly publication targeted at women who are "interested in the ways we think, communicate
and connect". The magazine's stance will be a refreshing one for women who feel patronised and condescended to by the gossipy, image-oriented content of traditional women's glossy magazines. Each issue is bursting with information about the latest psychological research and statistics. The celebrity interviews are fascinating, probing the subject's motivation and feelings about their vocation, rather than dwelling on the glamour or operating as a thinly veiled promotional piece for the subject's latest enterprise. The current issue, May 2006, features a revealing interview with Friend's star Lisa Kudrow, which skilfully but tactfully delves into the actress’s fears and insecurities about her life and career. Other features in the latest issue include an investigation into father-daughter relationships, a self-harmer's story of her recovery, and an unnervingly accurate personality test.
The magazine does contain some regular features more commonly associated with other women's glossies, such as cookery and beauty sections, but again the approach is focused towards individualism and well-being rather than keeping up with the latest trends. For example, one article discusses using diet to combat mood swings and fatigue. There is also an informative tie-in website, with expert advice, a forum, and the opportunity for reader's to get involved by contributing stories or taking part in research. For an alternative to fashion and gossip-obsessed women's magazines, Psychologies is highly recommended.
