TIME MAGAZINE

Newspaper Review by: SM THOMPSON

Last time I read TIME Magazine I was sitting waiting at San Francisco Airport in the
"Red Carpet Departure Lounge"
and it made interesting reading ... so with that in
mind I picked up the May 1 2006 Issue:
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is back with a new book entitled:
"The Mighty and the Almighty: Reflections on America, God and World Affairs" .... last heard of as a member of the then President of the United States of America ... Bill Clinton's team!
I once referred to the American political scene as /Cabinet/ and I was trashed with paper ... saying "No!" to that! I guess, they must have been members or supporters of the Republican Party which is now in power in the White House in America!
These ...people are never out of the news and reading on has been something of a challenge ... for example ... there is an inviting line which reads:
"I Love Him No Matter What" from the Notebook section and this refers to the disaster in America on 9/11 - its the mother of the son who was a terrorist and I believe has been held guilty for that particular incident ... the man on trial is: Zacarias Moussaoui ... they await the outcome ... the accused man and his mother!
IBM is grabbing headlines - when was it any different ... however, this time there is a graphic description of a "radish" justaposed with a "special radish" and the punch line is
/what makes you special IBM/
from this I deduce ... financial success on the global market and of course in America!
Having had some students from Italy fairly recently I note with interest that the new leader in Italy is Romano Prodi - a fine upstanding man he looks in the photograph displayed in
TIME Magazine: Time wraps it up by referring to President Bush's /Congratulations/to
Romano Prodi - he received a narrow victory in Italy at the polls over Silvio Berlusconi for the Job he now holds as Prime Minister.
France is featured prominently and there is much discussion on the recent unrest in Paris in the district of Clinchy-sous-Bois where they torched cars to draw attention to the problems in France of housing, unemployment, education, exclusion and /you name it ... whatever/
There is a relevant quote as follows:
"The ills of the banlieue are French ills" and presumably they affect us all!
There has long been a battle between Greeks and Turks and the present situation is highlighted due to Turkey's application as a member to the EU! The Faith that has no Place is an article about this conflict: it describes the squalid makeshift mosques, where Muslims in Athens await an official house of prayer! ... the stench is sickening ... They the ... Muslims in Athens declare that Greeks have nothing to fear from Islam - and cite the recent Olympics where there were no attacks!
My eye was drawn to a cartoon page at the back of Time Magazine entitled:
/The Last-Minute-Manager/ contributed by: Bruce Handy/Glynis Sweeny
and it reads: /But if you think I'm firing Rumsfeld, you're nuts/
I used to be a little 'nuts' but I graduated from that and now I am UPFRONT these days - top of the ladder stuff ... happy reading .. in TIME Magazine ...
