THE NEW ELECTRICAL LAMPThree years ago Matt Scottsat in a bright classroom of the Stanford Business Schoolthinking how one can bring
light to the remainder of the world. Thoughartificial light does not seem to be a necessity like food or the roof abovethe head but 1.6 Billion people in the world still do not have electricity. Inspiredby the Light up the World Foundation, which promotes the economical lightemitting diode (LED) the 31 year old Scott traveled to India anddiscovered in 2004 together with Amit Chugh a marketing strategy in order toreplace the kerosene lamp. The result is Mighty light, water and shockproof LEDlamp, which can be used as pocket lamp, night lamp or ceiling lamp. Powered bysolar energy it gives eight
hours long continuous light and can altogether be used 100,000hours long. Thus it is safer and
favorable than kerosene
lamps. LastNovember the scientist couple began to sell the lamps for 45
dollar a piece. TheLED technology progressed so, that everyone in New Yorkor Delhi wouldlike to have one of these lamps, claims Chugh. The 39-jährige Chugh hopes todevelop a 30-Dollar-Modell, which would follow even more favorable models. Withthe assistance of the donation, they have already sold 4000 pieces anddistributed to the earthquake shaken Pakistanand poor Afghanistan and Guatemala. In India Fischer and Weber use the lamps, in order toextend their working times.
