For years many people have thought that fish have 3 second memories. People look at fish and think they are unintelligent
and have no brain. The truth has shown that fish are
intelligent animals who do indeed think and feel. In the Telegraph 02/02/2008 “Bentley, a giant six-year-old Humphead Wrasse, has been trained to respond to a sound at meal times, in a similar way to Pavlov''''s dogs.” Although I don’t necessarily agree with using animals to do scientific testing many medical advances have made there breakthrough with the use of animals. Medical advances that probably wouldn’t have happened without animals being used. Particularly in the treatment and prevention of diseases. This can only be looked upon as a positive step forward in our
understanding of medical science. People are learning other ways of testing and we do not see as many cosmetic tests on animals as there used to be. The fish is being trained by Dr Phil Gee of Plymouth University who said. "We''''re learning more about fish every day and they are not the cold slimy brainless creatures many people still believe them to be. One of the most common misconceptions is that fish have very short memories. Who knows what this discovery will teach us or who indeed we will be able to use it, but it shows that we are understanding more and more about the intelligence of animals. Perhaps this will make others think before they inflict pain on animals. Maybe we will respect animals more and learn the importance they play in our every day lives. It would be such a boring world without animals and we need to remember the importance of animals.
