The Guardian

Newspaper Review by: SM THOMPSON

Today's Guardian is destined to keep your examination papers tidy ... the other day my friend and I were dining and
she prefers to call a "spade a spade" myself, well, I incline towards the generalization ... and rather than step on
all the Geography teachers in the County I usually refer to regions of the world as ... The Middle East ... or
Central and Eastern Europe ... mostly due to the long standing conflict over land and who owns what these days ...
The Guardian on this Tuesday, 19th September, 2006 features the BIRTHDAYS of the famous in this country ...
the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and other countries as well. Today
Kate Adie is 61: she is the BBC Journalist who was in conflict areas of the world ... I was off to the post office
sometime ago and outside in the square of a well known bookstore ... I met a friend ... and I enquired what
all the people were doing queuing up ... he replied that Kate Aidie had arrived from London and was doing
a book signing ... that's the closest I have ever been to this celebrity journalist ...
In a lighter frame ... Twiggy.. the 1960s model is 57 ... she is famous for thinness ... and wearing the
mini skirt and lots and lots of very dark eye make up with strange and wonderful hairstyles designed
by famous hairdressers ... she is now modelling for Marks and Spencer ... and she looks great altogether
in her recent set of outfits ...
The Conflict with Islam and His Holiness Pope Benedict XV1 is featured ... Pope has joined US crusade says
Iran ... do you think they are confusing the Pope with President George Bush ... I recall that Bush excites
that sort of comment .. with people waving banners ... shouting and screaming ... and demanding
apologies for lectures .... before you know where they are ... they will want a copy of the lecture
with its attendant worksheet ... then they can underscore the relevant remarks that gave offence ..
There is a disturbing picture of an effigy of the Pope ... set alight in Basra ...
There is a reported incident in Morocco of an Italian EU official and his Belgian wife, who were found stabbed to death at
their villa in Rabat... The Pope is planning a visit to Turkey ... in November and his aides in Turkey have agreed
that his planned visit should go ahead ...
I was called a " talented lady" a compliment well received by me recently .. its interesting to see how
talented poor get chance to join privileged elite of French Society ... my day will come ... hopefully soon.
The grandes ecoles are elite institutes in France ... established in 1747 and France is run by graduates of the grandest of grandes ecoles the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA) set by by Charles de Gaulle in 1945 to train technocrats ... heavy reading in today's Guardian ... keep on reading ....
