Thisis in reference to the
recent article that I read about therelationship between European Union and India as written by Mr.Jose,President of European Commission. While Jose has said about thecultural, ethnic similarities that Europe and India possess, both arestruggling to unite various religions and races into one fold.Indiahas a long
history of co-existing peacefully with various religions andraces. Although in recent times there were frequent clashes betweenHindus and Muslims, both have found way to live peacefully and inreligious harmony. They have understood the real culprits who areigniting the sentimental values and trying to profit from it. ButEurope has a long way to go in this episode. More and more Muslims aremoving into Europe, and with it, tensions have already been simmeringaround the corner. The terrorist attacks taking
place all over theworld are damaging the image of Islam, more so in Europe. The recentcartoon affair was all it took to show how Europeans view about Muslimsand Islam. Moving on to immigration policies, European Unionis always called a 'fortress'. While the commissioner has expressedoptimism about the growth of Indian labors in EU, one has to wonder howthis would take place. With the Polish plumbers issue rocking theParliament in Britain and more and more countries from eastern blocgetting integrated into the EU, Europe will become even a tighterfortress. This is the contrast with U.S.A, the land of immigrants andEurope, which has failed miserably in integration. Lastly, thetrade between EU and India has indeed sky-rocketed in the
past fewyears and touched around 40 billion euros last year. But as the authorrightly pointed out, India accounts for a mere 2% of the total tradewith the EU. So, there is still a lot of room for improvement andgrowth. India and Europe
share a history in the recent past. For goodor bad reasons, Indian history has entangled with Europe. Now it istime to move on, to build a formidable alliance against global threatsand to share a better future.
