Another blow for Camilla
Amidst striking red photographs picturing the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall on stage with the cast of Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco, nearing the end of their Royal visit to the USA, The Times
reports (08 Nov 05) that the former Archbishop of York has given HRH Prince Charles some clear advice. The paper (article by Andrew Pierce and Ruth Gledhill) reports that Lord Hope of Thornes, who retired from his position early this year, has stated in no uncertain terms that it would be contrary to the best interests of the Church of England if Camilla’s role were to evolve from Princess Consort into Queen. It is
reported that the former Archbishop bases his objection mainly on the problem of Charles and Camilla’s civil wedding service. Currently, the British Monarch also holds the title of Supreme Governor of the Church of England, which has been an ongoing stumbling block for the
divorced heir. It is also reported that the present Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, sees the union as problematic for the Church. The
issue of re-marriage for divorced individuals in the Church of England remains an issue of internal disagreement.
