Congress Extends President Bush`s Iraq
Endeavor Following a heated all night session- the United States Senate decided
to give President Bush an extended week on his Iraq endeavor. Jill Zuckman of the Chicago Tribune reported that the Democrats fell short in their attempt to force President Bush to set an Iraq War
withdrawal time table. A majority of senators i.e. 52-47 wanted to cut off debate on a resolution to set a time table for U.S. Troop withdrawal from Iraq. Sixty votes brings closure or a cut off of debate in the United States Senate. Following the vote- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Democrat of Nevada), pulled the
defense bill off the table. Republicans immediately accused Democrats of disappointing the troops. They asserted that not finishing the Defense Authorization Legislation would `` prevent service personnel from getting a 3.5 percent pay increase, retard the effort to bring military equipment up to contemporary standards and would stop the attempts to advance `care for wounded veterans.`
