Muslim Wins Democratic Congressional
Nomination in Minnesota
In the November 2006 Election- the United States Congress
could seat its first Muslim. Extracted from an account generated by Martiga Lohn of the Associated Press- Minnesota State Legislator Keith Ellison defeated three opponents to snare the Democratic
nomination from a Minneapolis Congressional District. To secure the nomination- the forty-three year old defense attorney repudiated Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and won the backing of a Minneapolis Jewish newspaper. He also identified himself with the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone. To win the Democratic Nomination Ellison succeeded in defeating several other contenders including Mike Erlandson, the former chief of staff to the sitting U.S. Representative Martin Sabo. Mr. Erlandson received the backing of U.S. Representative Sabo. If the November 2006 Election turns out as expected- Mr. Ellison will defeat Republican Nominee Alan Fine and the Independent Party`s Tammy Lee. Traditionally, this Minnesota Congressional District votes overwhelmingly for the Democratic nominee. Election official Hashi Abdi said of Keith Ellison- `A lot of the Muslim Community have a lot of sympathy for this guy.`
