Al-Qaida Contends that the Pope and the West Will Perish
Joining a crescendo of protest from the Islamic community over Pope Benedict XVI`S remarks on Islam- al-Qaida in Iraq lent its voice to demands for a papal apology. The past week witnessed Pope Benedict XVI use the words of a Byzantine emperor who depicted some of the instructions of Islam`s Prophet Muhammed as- `evil and inhuman.` He additionally noted that Islam secured converts `by the sword.` Anna Johnson of the Associated Press wrote that Pope Benedict XVI after apologying for his comments said- `I hope that this serves to appease hearts and to clarify the true meaning of the address, which in its totality was and is an invitation to frank and sincere dialogue, with great mutual
respect.` In an exchange of governmental communications- the Islamic nation of Morocco through its ruler King Mohammed VI penned a letter to the Vatican that urged Pope Benedict XVI to give `the same respect for Islam that you have for the other religions.` Outrage eminated even from the People`s Republic of China over this event. Chen Guangyuan, the President of Islamic Association of China said- `This has gravely hurt the feelings of the Muslims across the world, including those from China.`
