In mid November 2006, Seinfeld star Michael Richards went off on a
racist tirade when heckled by audience members of a
comedy club in Calafornia. It was captured by a cell phone camera and strewn over the
media. Is he a racist? That is not up for us to decide, and I don't think we are any better than he to judge him. I watched the video several times over and perhaps his most provocative statement was and this shocks you, what lies benieth you . a statement of disgust in generalrowards our society, one which made him a monster, regardless of whether he is one or not. In some ways he brings us to look at ourselves, and society as a whole, question our own morals and how corrupt we are. In several ways we cover up
racism, discrimination, and racial preference, by exhausting it in the media, by bringing it out so much it becomes surreal.
Regarding the incident, Michael Richards is not a comedian, he is not a performer, he is a screen actor. He is not what or whom he is on the screen, regardless of how we fall in love with his charichter it is only words; it is only motions. His tyrade was horrable yes, but ten years with a dead career can do that to a man, not that I defend him in any way. But what does lie benith you? Do you associate things with a
race, a denger, different words, different actions. You'd be a liar to say otherwise, maybe you don't let it get to your head, but it is there. In his apology, Michael Richards acted as if heknew not of his problem, and perhaps it is true. Maybe over the years it was not racism boiling up inside but anger, and frustration. My point in short is that the
public is too submissive, and too quick to judge, too quick to let things get to their heads; to quick to label. They come to conclusions based on other peoples
opinion. Maybe Richards is a bigot, but you don't know only he does.
