President Bush Pushes For Georgia Republicans In an attempt to forestall an expected Democratic take over of at least one
of the two Houses of Congress- President George Walker Bush barnstormed for Congressional Republican Candidates. Tom Baxter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Mr. Bush related to 6,000 people in Hanner Field House on the Georgia Southern University Campus stating that- `This election is far from over, although there are some people in Washington who already think they know the outcome of the election.` As his centerpiece in his address- the President taunted his tax cuts- as an example of the type of governing the citizenry desired. He predicted that the tax roll backs would disappear in a Democrat controled congress. He also asserted that Democrats `don`t have a plan for victory` in the war on terrorism. Suddenly, the South Georgia audience erupted in enthusiastic applause when Mr. Bush condemned New Jersey`s Supreme Court for clearing the path for gay marriages or civil unions in the Garden State. Unlike many other states at this time- in Georgia President Bush remains fairly popular with the electorate. Baxter cites a recent Mason-Dixon Polling & Research poll that put the President`s popularity at forty-eight percent. This poll also listed the war in Iraq at the top of concerns of voters. As a rallying cry- for the Republican incumbents and aspirants i.e. those who spoke before President George W. Bush- painted a bleak picture of a congress controled by the Democrats. Georgia`s U.S. Representative Charlie Norwood, an Augusta Republican, projected a possible phone dialogue in which Osama bin Laden states- `I`ll show you how to vote for Hillary.` An obvious reference to New York`s Junior United States Senator- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton- a possible 2008 Democratic Presidential Contender.
